Nancy Shafer can motivate your volunteers and inspire your staff. After one of Nancy's presentations, your audience will return to work and immediately begin implementing refreshing new ideas.

With 27 years of experience as a volunteer manager, Nancy has grown her program from one hospital with 300 volunteers to three hospitals with over 1100 volunteers who donate over 100,000 hours of volunteer service each year. In addition to three thriving volunteer programs, Nancy oversees an active thousand-member auxiliary and four retail operations in Des Moines, Iowa.

Named the Volunteer Administrator of Iowa in 1991 and awarded the DOVIA Award for Excellence in Des Moines in June 2002, Nancy is respected by her peers and members of the community.

Nancy has been helping volunteer directors grow their programs for twenty years by leading volunteer management workshops for the local community college and as a faculty member for the Iowa State University's Non Profit Management Certificate Program.

Nancy was the president of the Junior League of Des Moines in 1993-94 where she planted seeds that developed into the Mary Louise Smith Women's Leadership Initiative.

What can you expect from a Nancy Shafer presentation? Nancy will share stories from the field that will touch your heart and help you reflect on new approaches to today's volunteer management challenges. She will help you take an attitudinal look at recruitment, and change your focus from recognition to appreciation. Her presentations include time to interact with other workshop participants to reflect together and share resources.

To Lead Is To Serve is a tremendous way to reach out to audiences. Recently, Nancy presented a workshop honoring staff members at the health system for their work with volunteers. Some staff members do not know very much about working with volunteers and we wanted to increase their knowledge. The theme for the day was based on the song, "Happy Together" by the Turtles. After setting the stage with resources from the book, Nancy asked the audience if they knew of this song from the past. Two nurse managers jumped up and started singing and dancing and leading the room of 50 hospital employees in a rousing version. It was a magic moment because the song brought back great memories of the good old days when people had time to be with each other. It gave the audience a reason to smile and to examine the ways they currently deal with volunteers and think about ideas for future dealings.

The remainder of the seminar was a rousing success! Participants reflected on how much volunteers mean to them as a part of the hospital family. New ideas and new attitudes emerged.

Nancy looks forward to future seminars sharing To Lead Is To Serve .
