Leadership tips for new managers and volunteer leaders

My Photo
Name: Shar McBee

Shar McBee is a motivational speaker, a consultant, and the author of two bestselling books. Shar had never received management training when she was suddenly put in charge of supervising 500 people. It was hard. People wouldn't cooperate. They wouldn't do what they were supposed to do. Even worse, they criticized Shar for what she did. Finally, a wise mentor taught Shar a leadership secret. She tried it and it worked amazingly. In business, it made it easy to attract customers. On volunteer projects, it made it very easy to attract volunteers and donations. (In some cases, the increase was as much as 500 %.) Today Shar McBee speaks at about 35 leadership conferences each year. Sharing her secret with new managers and volunteer leaders, Shar has helped over 150,000 people become better leaders. When they learn the Joy of Leadership method, instead of feeling frenzied, being the leader becomes fun.

How to Control Your Good Fortune

Joy of Leadership

Everything on earth is subject to change.
Good fortune doesn’t last forever.
Misfortune is an inevitable part of the
cycle of good fortune.
You can’t control that.

You can control misfortune that
comes from a mean spirit.
You can also control true good fortune
because it isn’t financial.
True good fortune is a state of mind.

Can You Tell the Truth?

Joy of Leadership

Six weeks ago an order arrived for
5 books and CD’s.
I forgot to fill the order.
Then yesterday, the customer sent
an email asking about her order.

I wanted to make up an excuse.
Instead, I just told her the truth.
I sent the books and added an extra CD
for my negligence.

Her response:
“I have found that all businesses (and people)
make mistakes – but the thing that separates
the extraordinary from the ordinary is how the
really good businesses deal with the problem
and give that little ‘extra’. You just gave
the ‘extra’. Thanks so much."

Just as a flame depends on fuel, when words
are based on Truth, they have power.
That power can turn a bad situation to
your favor. – Shar McBee

To Lead is to Serve

Joy of Leadership

A king and his son loved each other
very much but they could not get along.
So the son left home and went far away.

After awhile word came back that the
son was not doing well. The king sent
a message to the prince and said,
"Come home."

But the prince was too proud. He sent
a message back, "I cannot." Then the king
sent another message saying, "Just turn
around and come as far as you can. I will
meet you wherever you are."

This story is in my book, To Lead is to
Serve
, which I wrote in 1992. I hope it
is relevant for you today. – Shar McBee

Facing a Trying Situation?

Joy of Leadership

Thinking of giving up. Fear. Despair.
Restless discontent. Ambition.
I’ve been through all of these emotions recently
as I’ve tried to close a big contract.

You can’t force your grass to grow.
You have to let it grow.

In the same way, as I face a trying situation,
unless I keep my heart steady,
I’ll create more obstacles.

Instead of pushing, use a trying situation to
practice achieving a quiet heart. – Shar McBee
