Leadership tips for new managers and volunteer leaders

My Photo
Name: Shar McBee

Shar McBee is a motivational speaker, a consultant, and the author of two bestselling books. Shar had never received management training when she was suddenly put in charge of supervising 500 people. It was hard. People wouldn't cooperate. They wouldn't do what they were supposed to do. Even worse, they criticized Shar for what she did. Finally, a wise mentor taught Shar a leadership secret. She tried it and it worked amazingly. In business, it made it easy to attract customers. On volunteer projects, it made it very easy to attract volunteers and donations. (In some cases, the increase was as much as 500 %.) Today Shar McBee speaks at about 35 leadership conferences each year. Sharing her secret with new managers and volunteer leaders, Shar has helped over 150,000 people become better leaders. When they learn the Joy of Leadership method, instead of feeling frenzied, being the leader becomes fun.

3 Q’s Before You Make a Change

You have the courage to make a change.
Do others have the courage to follow you?

For people to go with you into the unknown,
first be sure that they trust you.
1. Do they have confidence in you?
2. Are they sure that your motives are not selfish?
3. Is this the right time to make the change?

If you can say YES, go ahead.
People will follow you. – Shar McBee

In a Conflict?

Joy of Leadership

In a conflict, you have to give your
opponent a face saving way out.

Gandhi taught this to
Martin Luther King. – Shar McBee

Have You Been Bitten?

Joy of Leadership

Attempting to fix people is like
trying to force progress.

When we try to change people
rather than letting them evolve,
we get bitten.

It’s a very thin line that you step
over when you tell someone what
is wrong with him.

Thorny situations develop over time.
They can’t be fixed over night.
It takes tolerance and patience.

I know this. Every time I’ve
tried to fix people, it has failed.
But this week I did it again.
I told a whole group what was
wrong with them.

And guess what?
I got bitten. – Shar McBee

Working with a Worm?

Joy of Leadership

When you doubt that things will work out,
you are really doubting the creative process.

You can’t judge matters by their appearances.
What looks like a worm today, could be a butterfly.

When you mistrust this process,
and contrive for results, you may disregard
the small steps that lead to progress. – Shar McBee

Begin with Respect

Joy of Leadership

When people feel respected, they feel safe.
When you decide that someone is hopeless,
you make it hard for him to change.

Eliza Doolittle said, “The difference between
a lady and a flower girl is not how she behaves,
but how she’s treated.”

Although Professor Henry Higgins transformed
the Cockney flower girl into a duchess,
he didn’t respect her. This disrespect
made it hard for her to change. – Shar McBee
