Leadership tips for new managers and volunteer leaders

My Photo
Name: Shar McBee

Shar McBee is a motivational speaker, a consultant, and the author of two bestselling books. Shar had never received management training when she was suddenly put in charge of supervising 500 people. It was hard. People wouldn't cooperate. They wouldn't do what they were supposed to do. Even worse, they criticized Shar for what she did. Finally, a wise mentor taught Shar a leadership secret. She tried it and it worked amazingly. In business, it made it easy to attract customers. On volunteer projects, it made it very easy to attract volunteers and donations. (In some cases, the increase was as much as 500 %.) Today Shar McBee speaks at about 35 leadership conferences each year. Sharing her secret with new managers and volunteer leaders, Shar has helped over 150,000 people become better leaders. When they learn the Joy of Leadership method, instead of feeling frenzied, being the leader becomes fun.

Surprise Opportunities – Don’t Miss Them

Joy of Leadership

The other day I was playing tennis
and hit a very good shot.
It went hard to the back court.
My opponent had to scramble to return it.

And guess what?
I was so busy congratulating myself,
that I missed the next point.

It’s hard to be modest about our achievements.
The same is true when we flub.
We tend to dwell on our mistakes
and on our magnificence.

Both take us out of the moment.
Both prevent us from being receptive to
what comes next.
(Which is what happened to me when I got lost
in my self congratulation.)

Doing the right thing requires that we stay
balanced and present NOW - in the moment.
If we don’t, we expose ourselves to danger
and miss the opportunities that come
in surprise moments. – Shar McBee

Wanting

Joy of Leadership

When you want something
too much
people perceive it.
Then they can use it
to exploit you.

Try this:
When you really
want something,
before you work
on gaining it,
work on re-gaining your
inner independence.

You may be surprised
at your results. – Shar McBee

Fundamentals of Human Nature

Joy of Leadership

When we are caught in an abysmal situation,
there is a way out…if we understand four
fundamentals of human nature.

1. When our emotions rule, our reasoning powers retreat.
2. Impatience makes us try to force a solution.
3. Envy arises when others get away with bad
behavior while we do the right thing.
4. Our hurt pride takes away our happiness.

If your efforts are not respected and rewarded –
Don’t feel devastated.
Don’t give up.
Don’t defend yourself by pointing the finger at others.

Do become calm.
Avoid becoming emotional.
Give your best effort, and go with the flow.
Then wait and let time take care of it. – Shar McBee

To Make the Impossible, Possible

Joy of Leadership

Individual work is weak.
Team work is strong.
Do you know a “one woman wonder”?

She’ll put on a fabulous event.
She’ll work herself sick.
But her organization will never grow.

People actually feel hurt
when you don’t let them participate
or when you do it all alone.

To make the impossible, possible,
you have to trust the unknown.
You have to let people help you. – Shar McBee
